When I initially posted this, I thought it was off-topic for Preface to Atheism. But thanks to the discussion with Blinn below, I'm beginning to think it was on-topic all along. Even disputes about sex and gender, it turns out, depend on how we understand our understanding of the world.

Funny. FWIW I think that along secular lines at with respect to questions of gender and sex, it clears up a lot of confusion just to use the two synonymously. Alex Byrne makes the case cogently (and to me anyway, persuasively) in his book _The Trouble with Gender_. The determining factor isn't "genitalia" so much as developmental gamete production pathways. Most of the rest strikes me as pretty thinly-veiled theology.
